My birth name is Shenelle, feel free to call me Shen, Elle or whichever makes you comfortable. My mother Sonia Burrell, has transitioned. In honor of her fight as a victim of domestic violence & sexual assault, I'm hosting walks in her memory. These walks are not just about remembering a stranger who'd been fighting for her life. We're walking for the countless women of color who've suffered. My belief is that the world is one big family. Therefore, these beliefs lead to manifestations in real time. When my mother was unable to parent me due to conditions such as: Drug & alcohol addiction, depression, physical ailments, PTSD, sexual trauma, homelessness & domestic violence, the universe conspired to bring me a mother-figure or any person parallel to actual relatives. Sonia, wasn't just a woman who loved to party & celebrate life, she was everyone's friend. Sometimes, being a friend was all that she could be. Despite her responsibility to both parent her children and community alone she never gave up. Sonia was a professional Chef, Nurse and so much more.
From the east to west coast, from Canada to Jamaica, everyone was a friend of Sonia's. In my opinion, she was a reflection of all of the women across the African Diaspora and every impoverished hood. This reflection of the Black/African woman mirrors a perspective unconditional love paradigm. Therefore, she'd loved everyone when they couldn't love her back. GirlTrek not only loves our members, but teaches the entire world how to love us. My hopes are that we'll host walks in all 50 states.
