Season Kick-Off and Honoring Harriet Tubman
Join us for Day 1 as we kick-off the GirlTrek 2019 season and celebrate Harriet Tubman Memorial Day (Sunday, March 10th.) We're calling all trekkers and family and friends to join us on this walk in honor of Harriet Tubman. If you've been continuously trekking through the off-season, or you're looking to re-start your wellness journey, or if you're looking to begin a brand new focus on self-care, this is the trek for you. We'll bring together veteran organizers, trek leaders, and newbies, so all levels and abilities are welcome - no sister left behind!
Meet-up is in the Piety Street (free) public parking lot (3360 Chartres Street.) Then we'll climb the Piety Street footbridge ("the rusty bridge") to enter Crescent Park. For those with mobility issues, an elevator is available at the Mandeville Street crossing (approximately 2300 N. Peters Street) - you can trek along on Chartres Street, on the outside of the park and re-join trekkers as they exit Crescent Park for the second part of our trek. Or, those not taking the stairs can also enter the park at approximately 3900 Chartres Street at Bartholomew Street. (Follow ramp (on right) through the break in the floodwall. Turn right at the top of the ramp into free public parking lot.)
The trek is mostly along the Mississippi River, from Piety Street to St. Peter Street, and back (from Crescent Park through the French Market to the Historical Marker honoring enslaved ancestors ensnared in the Transatlantic Slave Trade to Louisiana, and back to our starting point.) Please note that we'll be crossing traffic lanes, before and after entering the French Market.
