GirlTrek at Essence Festival! Healing Walk for our Ancestors co-hosted by Penny DeNoble

Are you attending Essence Festival this year? Join GirlTrek co-founders Vanessa and Morgan and local co-host Penny DeNoble in Congo Square on Saturday, July 7th, 2018, as we support the 18th annual Maafa Commemoration. The Maafa Commemoration, invites local New Orleans residents and visitors to a healing ceremony and walk to honor our ancestors and reflect on the impacts of the Middle Passage and Trans Atlantic Slave Trade. (Please see note at the end about dress code) The morning will include drummers and musicians leading a procession from Congo Square through historic Tremé, with a brief stop at St. Augustine Catholic Church, the site of the Tomb of the Unknown Slave. From there, the procession continues through the French Quarter, with pauses at Café Maspero and the Royal Orleans Hotel, where slave auctions regularly took place. Then in Woldenburg Park amid high spirits, drumming, dancing, singing and praying, ancestors will be honored by name-not just those affected by the Transatlantic Slave Trade, but also individuals who were victims of such events as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the levee breaches and senseless violence. As is the tradition of the Maafa Commemoration, white attire and comfortable shoes is the appropriate dress. We ask that Trekkers who will be walking with us also wear white- NOT Superhero Blue. For more information on the walk, please visit -https://www.ashecac.org/the-maafa-commemoration/

The ceremony begins in Congo Square at 7AM and last approximately 30-minutes. The walk will begin directly after. Look for us near the Louis Armonstrong statue. Parking is free and open to the public at the Mahalia Jackson Theater parking lot. So bring a friend and join us as we bring tribute and pay honor to those who came before us!
