GirlTrek Overtown is trekking and celebrating our SuperHERo Hattie McDaniels
On this day in 1940 the brilliantly talented Ms. Hattie McDaniel (born June 10, 1895 in Wichita, Kansas and died October 26,1952. In Hollywood, CA) became the first African American to win the Academy Award for her role as "Mammy" in the movie "Gone with the wind". She was a gritty trailblazer who paved the way for so many Black actresses who have followed in her footsteps. She endured so much at the hands of the racist system within Hollywood, even after her death from breast cancer (after surviving a heart attack), her final wish, to be buried in Hollywood Cemetary was denied because of her beautifully melanated skin. So on this day, although her Oscar which she left to Howard University, was deemed valueless by appraisers and later went missing --we, at GirlTrek Overtown will honor and pay homage to her power, talent and indomitable spirit by beginning our walk at The Historic Lyric theater! Please join us bright and early wearing your comfortable walking shoes. Bring your water bottle so you can stay hydrated. We look forward to seeing you! You belong here sis!
