National Hike Day: Indiana Dunes State Park
Come out for a beautiful morning of hiking at the Indiana Dunes State Park. We will hike a total of approximately 5 miles. We will course over the 3 tallest dunes in the region on trail 8, also known as the 3 Dune Challenge, followed by a mostly flat, with the exception of 1 dune, hike out to the beautiful Beachhouse Blowout overlooking Lake Michigan. This hike is moderate level, but accessible for beginners as well. Going up the sand dunes can be challenging, but with pacing and ample breaks, it is very doable.
Trail 8 is only 1.5 miles of the total hike, but is the most challenging due to the 3 inclines. The first two are steep sandy dunes, the third has a stairway in place.
Trail 9 is mostly flat with packed soil with just one moderate dune at the end. The payoff is a breathtaking view of Lake Michigan.
For this hike, you'll need supportive closed toe shoes. Hiking boots or athletic shoes will suffice. Please come prepared with 2 sources of water and snacks for the trail. Hiking poles can be helpful, but they aren't necessary. Dress for the weather. Layers are best.
We will meet at the Nature Center at 11 am sharp. To enter the park, there is a entry fee of $7 in state or $12 out of state per vehicle. Carpooling is highly recommended. Ask the attendant to direct you to the Nature Center. I'll be there rocking superhero blue.
See you there!
