Jane’s Walk Germantown
Philly is joining cities around the country & world in the annual moving tribute honoring the late urbanist Jane Jacobs for her work in promoting walkable cities during her birthday weekend.
Come with me to represent GirlTrek on the Germantown walk or go to
https://janeswalk.org/united-states/philadelphia-pa/ & find a walk that fits your schedule Fri, Sat or Sun. Just show up in your superhero blue.
Here are the details about the Germantown meet-up.
WALK LEADER: Bob Seeley, Walk Germantown
MEETING PLACE: Battle of Germantown Monument in Vernon Park (5800 Germantown Ave)
Rain or Shine. Free. Public.
This walk follows part of the route for the proposed Belfield-Rittenhouse Bypass, a 1960s project which would have destroyed a large part of the Germantown neighborhood to make way for a four-lane highway. Community pressure stopped this project. Learn more about the history, visit some of the area where houses would have been demolished, and discuss the lessons of the Bypass proposal and the campaign that opposed the proposal.
Accessibility considerations: Steep slopes. Busy sidewalks and route will cross several busy streets (at traffic signals). Dogs and bicycles welcome.
Walk will end at the corner of Wayne Ave and Rittenhouse St, Germantown, Philadelphia
