DMV Supersized Superhero Saturday - Roosevelt Island and the Potomac Heritage Trail
Ain't no party like a GirlTrek Party cuz a GirlTrek Party won't stop!
All GirlTrekkers in the DMV are encouraged to join us as we take over Roosevelt Island for this Supersized Superhero Saturday.
We will hike Roosevelt Island, a hidden oasis right off the George Washington Parkway on the Potomac River. The unpaved dirt trail is full of spectacular views of the Key Bridge, Arlington Bridge and Georgetown. While on the island, we will also take a moment to check out the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial located on the Memorial Plaza. Once we complete the Swamp trail circuit around Roosevelt Island, we will take the Mount Vernon Trail to the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail. This will lead us to a view of the Three Sisters, which is a three rock formation on the Potomac River.
This trail is about 4.5 miles and can take up to 2.5 hours to complete. Therefore, please layer up in your Superhero blue and GirlTrek gear for the cooler temperature. It is recommended that you wear sturdy sneakers or light weight hiking boots. The island is on marshland so the trail may be muddy or wet. You may also want to consider bringing gloves and a hat to protect your hands and feet. You should also bring at least 20 oz of water to stay hydrated.
Free parking is available in the two parking lots right next to the footbridge to Roosevelt Island. Parking is limited and fills up pretty quickly. The Rossyln Metro station is approximately a 10 to 15 minute walk away.
We look forward to celebrating an awesome 2019 GirlTrek Season by completing Day 30 of the #weareharriet challenge together!
