It's that time of year again when GirlTrek DMV takes over the Maryland Heights Trail in Harper's Ferry. This hike is full of STEEP
inclines and is approximately 7 miles round trip. This hike never disappoints with a few historical forts and spectacular views!
We will meet at the Visitors Center for our talk before the walk. Board the shuttle to Lower Town. From Lower Town, we will walk approximately 1.25 miles (including walking across a bridge over the Shenandoah River) to the Maryland Heights Trail and then the first incline begins.
Did I say this is a STEEP
hike? At times you may feel like you are climbing a continuous HILL
. We will slow down our pace and typically walk about a 30 minute mile allowing for plenty of breaks for water and to catch your breath. The entire hike is approximately 7 miles.
The hardwork pays off with the beautiful views (Shenandoah and Potomac River intersect, Lower Town) at the Overlook. We will take a 30 minute break to enjoy the overlook while we nourish our bodies and of course take pictures.
You will burn lots of calories so please bring a light snack to eat. I recommend boiled eggs, nuts, a light sandwich (PB&J or turkey), fruit, and/or trail mix. Bring at least 2 bottles of water to stay hydrated. Please limit your caffeine the morning of this hike.
This hike is STEEP
and includes a descent on rocky terrain to the Overlook. Hiking boots that provide ankle support are also recommended. Trekking poles came in handy last time for a lot of GirlTrekkers.
If you recently had surgery, have issues with your knees, or have a fear of heights, you may want to sit this hike out. Your safety is the most important factor. If you have any hesitation, listen to your gut and join us on a less strenuous hike.
Don't forget your Girltrek shirt or Superhero blue, sunscreen, bug spray, EpiPen, medication and a head covering to protect your head/hair.
Call me if you would like to discuss this hike further.
Note: There is a $15 fee per vehicle to enter the National Park. You pay this fee at the entrance gate to the Visitor's Center.
