GirlTrek Takes Poor Mountain
First things first: there will be a professional guide on the trail!
Secondly: bring water. One liter AT A MINIMUM. It's hot and humid and dehydration sneaks up on you.
Thirdly: bring a backpack or something similar, something that can hold your snacks (BRING SNACKS or a full-blown meal).
Fourthly, bring running shoes or hiking boots, the more tread on the bottom, the better--you'll need that to grip the ground! Make sure they're broken in: you do NOT want to wear brand new shoes!
Okay, last one: did I say bring water?
Now, onto business...
If you signed up with Play Roanoke, meet her at the Norwich Center at 2127 Buford Ave SW Roanoke, VA.
If not, meet us at the Trailhead!
Blacksburg averages 1900ft, Christiansburg hovers around 2100ft, so at 3,928 feet, Poor Mountain is gonna be a steep climb! It'll be worth it for the views at the top and the chance to see the world's largest population of piratebush! The hike will be just under 4 miles and will take a few hours (alltrails.com reviews average about three hours and it's a great resource), but with lots of steep stone stairs, loose rocks, almost 900 feet of elevation gain from start to summit, be prepared for a moderate to difficult hike. Bring lots of water (*at least* 1 liter), break in your shoes well before the big day, and wear light clothing that you don't mind sweating in.
Sign-up with Play Roanoke (https://www.playroanoke.com/roanoke-7-summits/) to join their group. The deadline for that is October 3rd.
...or just come along and hike with me!
